Friday night was a massive night for streaming platform Netflix. As the brand looks to branch out once again, they have made some massive splashes in live television. The company had, until very recently, specialized in movies and shows, including some original content. And then came the big sports splashes. In short order, Netlfix secured the exclusive streaming to a slate of Christmas Day NFL games, Monday Night RAW and the return of Mike Tyson to a boxing ring. The Tyson fight with Jake Paul kicked off their live sports efforts on November 15th, 2024.

Chances are, if you watched the Tyson fight on Friday, you know how things went. Or, if you followed the news via social media, you definitely know. Even if you don’t care about the boxing match. So, needless to say, it was hard to ignore the stuttering, buffering and freezing that many customers reported experiencing on Friday during the live stream. The platform acknowledged the issues, but also noted that upwards of 60 million people watched the fight, which saw Jake Paul win via judge’s decision.

Knowing that the flagship WWE show, Monday Night RAW, is heading to Netflix in early 2025, Fightful reached out to the company for their thoughts about those issues. How would things go if RAW similarly experienced the streaming issues?

As one WWE official commented, they don’t normally experience 60 million customers streaming anything for WWE. Or, put it another way, if the company ever had an event of that magnitude and reach, it would be a “good problem to have”. That much is probably true.

In the grand scheme of things, and from someone who makes a living in IT? Odds are Netflix knows where they had the most issues and will be making corrections between now and the NFL games on Christmas. Those may not break 60 million streams, but they do represent a next big test. And as such, another opportunity for the streaming platform to fine tune things before RAW comes to it’s new home.
