If rumors are to be believed, Gunther’s WrestleMania 40 loss could have looked a lot different.

I stress that this is a rumor, and while the person dishing it is a former WWE employee, I feel like this one needs to be taken with a big grain of salt. Matt Camp spoke recently and revealed that, according to what he knew and heard, there could have been a Bloodline element against Gunther in Philadelphia. Well, former Bloodline really. As we know now, Gunther was challenged by, and lost the title to, Sami Zayn. But Camp says things could have gone quite differently.
As he said it, there may have been plans for Jey Uso to challenge and defeat Gunther. Instead, it was Zayn. Jey Uso challenged Gunther prior to WrestleMania-and lost, thanks to his brother Jimmy interfering. That led to the Jimmy and Jey clash. That match didn’t go off as well as had been hoped. However, here is where I throw a wet blanket on the reports using sheer logic (because unlike Camp, I’ve never been employed by WWE).
Change of a title match
Way back about a year ago, we all remember when Jey Uso challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Championship. And just when it seemed like Jey was going to do it? Jimmy interfered and set them on a collision course. We and others even shared the report that, way back then. WWE had intentions of keeping the brothers apart until WrestleMania 40. Now, it’s entirely possible that Gunther versus Jey was also kicked around at that time, but I doubt it. At that point, so much covered the Bloodline fracturing with Jey and Jimmy, that feud was seen as a big deal.

Yes, Jey deserves that singles title-and he may finally get it, as he will challenge Bron Breakker for the gold. But, I really don’t think Jimmy and Jey was getting ignored and replaced by Jey and Gunther. While some might want the brothers clash re-done or done differently, I doubt many would wish to change the Gunther/Zayn clash. A WrestleMania loss to Jey would have been nice, but Sami beating Gunther was a classic. So, was Gunther’s WrestleMania 40 loss to Sami the right call?
