Goldberg ‘Pissed Off’ with WWE’s Handling of His Retirement Match: ‘Shame on Me for Thinking it Would be Different’

Despite getting a main event spot and a grand send-off in his adopted home of Atlanta, GA, Goldberg is very annoyed with how WWE handled his wrestling retirement match.

On Saturday night, WCW icon and WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg stepped into the ring one last time. Even though he has not competed in several years, he was given a headlining slot on Saturday Night’s Main Event. And a World Heavyweight Title match against the current champion, Gunther.

While he didn’t win, it seemed like a nice send-off for the wrestling legend — aside from his farewell message being cut off by NBC. However, it seems the master of the spear and jackhammer was not happy with the overall setup and promotion of his wrestling retirement match.

“I would have loved for them to announce it in January. And have a build-up to it and do something like that, that I thought was maybe worthy of my career,” Goldberg said on Ariel Helwani’s podcast. “Let’s just say they chose to do it with three weeks’ notice. It is what it is. It’s part of the package. It’s part of the meal you get dealt. And I would be remiss in thinking I thought the meal would be different, but shame on me for thinking it would be different.”

“Let’s just say I’m pissed off at the way that I went out. I put so much into it, and I don’t feel the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I accomplished. I’m not going to say I’m not ecstatic about the opportunity that I got,” he added. “I was a WCW guy. I think it could have been done a little bit differently, that’s all. I’m happy with my performance and the setting, but could it have been better? Absolutely, it can always be better.”

Goldberg does have some understandable gripes. But also, he received something many other legends don’t. Plus, he was fit into the storytelling of a company that is doing big business and has a lot of developing narratives every week. Some will feel the wrestling legend was treated unfairly. While many others will see this as another instance of the retired (?) star seeming ungrateful.
