During a recent interview, CM Punk detailed who is at the top of his list of dream match opponents. But is either actually possible before he brings his career to a close?
CM Punk was already a WWE legend before he chose to leave the company for a decade due to his frustrations from working with company founder Vincent McMahon. However, when he made his triumphant return at Survivor Series 2023, he had the opportunity to change some negative narratives and add to his impressive legacy in the promotion.
He has again become one of the most popular performers in the company and is getting the chance to check off several things off his wrestling to-do list before he eventually ends his career. That includes faces of the current top stars of today and rising talents that will one day take his place.
Wrestling fans got an example of that when CM Punk battled Seth Rollins in the main event of WWE Raw’s debut on Netflix. And the idea of dream matches was a topic of discussion during a recent interview Punk had with the “Nightcap” podcast. And two names came up. But matchups with those wrestling stars are unlikely to ever happen.
CM Punk still yearns for dream match with ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin
“One name always comes to mind. It’s ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin,” Punk revealed [h/t Wrestling Inc]. “Unfortunately, he had to retire because of injuries and he had a stroke and everything like that. But Bret Hart is another one.
“Bret Hart would be a dream for me because that’s a guy that I looked up to when I was a kid. That’s a guy that helped get me into this sport, just from an interest perspective.”
A CM Punk vs. Steve Austin match was hinted at over a decade ago in the build to the release of WWE 2K in 2013. However, the match never truly came close to happening. However, of the two, if either were possible a match with “Stone Cold” would have a slim chance after the WWE icon made his return to the ring three years ago at WrestleMania 39.
CM Punk also revealed that another reason the Hart match appeals to him is because of the friendship the two still have to this day.
“To this day, I could text Bret right now and be like ‘What’s up Bret-sky? I have a question. I need some advice,’ and he’ll hit me back up like right away,” he said. “So much love to him.”
