CM Punk has never been one to hold back his opinions and many fans of the WWE Universe are buzzing about his latest comments. The outspoken star named none other than John Cena as a potential dream match in a recent interview.
Earlier this year, John Cena, a 16-time World Champion and one of the most touted names in wrestling revealed that he will hang up his boots by 2025. Fellow wrestlers are making a flurry of challenges to share the stage with the Cenation Leader one more time.
It’s going to be a very emotional farewell for Cena’s retirement tour; fans and superstars alike will be honoring his incredible legacy. For CM Punk that also means rekindling one of WWE’s greatest rivalries.
CM Punk’s Match Wishlist: From Rising Stars to Box Office Giants
In an interview with WWE analyst Peter Rosenberg recently, Punk looked back at potential opponents for his own in-ring return.
Although Cena is top on Punk’s list for a major match, the Straight Edge Superstar also named other wrestlers he’s hungry to go mano a mano with. Punk mentioned that there were some current WWE standouts that he would like to work with, like Chad Gable, Bronson Reed, Ludwig Kaiser, and Gunther because of their technical ability and their in-ring prowess.
“If I’m selfishly thinking about guys I’d like to wrestle, the list is pretty lengthy,” Punk admitted.
But when talking about ‘money matches’ that could be headlined on a premium pay-per-view, Punk didn’t hold back. Potential blockbuster opponents of Punk include Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, The Rock and John Cena.
“I think whenever myelf and Roman Reigns are faec to face on televisoin, I think that’s gonna be a moment. (…) The table’s set for me and Cody. And you never know when The Rock’s gonna come back. There’s Big Match John rigt around the corner”. Punk said.
CM Punk’s Pitch for a One More John Cena Match
In the interview, Punk highlighted the importance of going at it again with Cena.
Another guy that I don’t want to talk about because he’s going to do his own thing. And if I’m a part of that, what a fortunate career I’ve had. But John deserves everything that he wants. I mean, he calls his own shots, is basically what I’m saying. But yeah, I’d love to get hands on him too.
For years, WWE has told the story of Punk and Cena, and their 2011 Money in the Bank match is arguably one of the best in company history. The last time the two faced off in a singles match was over a decade ago, on the February 25th episode of Monday Night RAW. It’s the type of showdown fans want to see and a final one between these two legends would surely entertain the world.
Will Cena vs. Punk Happen in 2025?
Now that Cena is retiring, a final match against CM Punk would be tantalizing. Chemistry and history make them the perfect challengers to a high-profile fight somewhere like Wrestlemania or SummerSlam.
The potential for one final brawl with Cena could be too good to pass up as Punk tries to come to terms with the rigors of the WWE schedule. Fans are speculating whether or not it happens, because that’s a possibility, and, if it does, what magical thing could these two do in the ring again?
