Women Of Wrestling has steadily grown its brand and built real momentum over the last year. However, when will they look to strengthen the roster by signing major veteran free agents or creating crossover moments with mainstream celebrities? Company co-owner David McLane offered some big updates on those topics this week.
McLane and WOW co-owner Jeanie Buss made headlines last week when, during a panel at San Diego Comic Con, they invited Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham to appear at one of their events. As unlikely as it would seem, the WNBA star recently admitted being a long-time pro wrestling fan. And her openness to the idea of making an appearance for a company.
In a new exclusive conversation with Ringside Intel, McLane revealed that the idea of Cunningham at a WOW event was discussed even before SDCC. And that the basketball veteran doesn’t have to compete in the ring if she is interested in working with the all-women’s promotion.
“She’d be great in WOW,” McLane said. “She has all the athletic background. People said, ‘Why would you mention Sophie? She’s in the WNBA, and you could mention other WNBA stars.’ She has the actual pedigree and background to be great in professional wrestling. And not necessarily does she have to wrestle. She’s got a new podcast out. And she could be a great manager, or she could be a great commentator.
“I’d love to have Sophie Cunningham get into WOW. The door is wide open… Jeanie and I had discussed it prior to going [to SDCC],” he added. “We watched her take down a WNBA player, and I said, ‘That’s the Marty McSorley for women’s basketball. She’s Caitlin Clark’s enforcer.”
When will Women Of Wrestling target major pro wrestling free agents?

WOW develops most of its talent at its training academy. However, turning aspiring wrestlers into WOW Superheroes that draw interest from fans is a long process. With WOW now airing taped events on multiple platforms, including Pluto TV, bringing in some big names would seem like another good option to help grow the brand.
McLane told Ringside Intel he hopes to start dipping into pro wrestling free agency eventually. But the promotion needs to surpass one more key hurdle before it can do that.
“I look forward to [targeting free agents]. I think what WOW has to do, though, is it’s got to grow. We’ve been growing organically, and we’ve been growing with the help of Paramount. And we’ve got to grow to another level, another step up as a wrestling brand, and that is live television,” he said. “We’ve got to get to live TV and weekly broadcasts, and then we can [look into adding notable free agents].”
Women Of Wrestling currently airs its content on Pluto TV, Roku, and Vice TV.
