After a good Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, my expectations of Survivor Series were quite high. Fortunately, the WWE met my expectations, but with some hiccups along the way. So, without further ado, here is my take on Survivor Series 2017!
Matt Hardy Vs. Elias Samson
Even though there was little storyline surrounding this match, it is difficult to find a poor match that includes Matt Hardy. Even though the match was created to promote Elias. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
That being said, there were a lot of things missing from this match, but I don’t believe the wrestlers are at fault here. For this match, I would give a 7/10. Why deduct three points? Since this match did not make sense in terms of story and in terms of beating a legend such as Matt Hardy in a pay-per-view pre-show But well, that’s just my take on it.
Enzo Amore Vs. Kalisto
The only reason I would give this match a rating at all is the capabilities of Kalisto in the ring. Everyone knows that Enzo is not the greatest technical wrestler, and all I can say is that it showed during the pay-per-view.
Yes, Enzo is good on the mic, but not in the ring. Kalisto should have taken that title to turn the cruiserweights back into something to take seriously. The rating I would give this match? 4/10; this is being generous. As I said before, the only thing saving this match is Kalisto.
Breezango vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
The evening certainly picked up with this match. Even though it was not the most spectacular match of the evening, it certainly was interesting to watch.
There was only one problem with this match though, more specifically a lack of story. That being said, I do believe they are laying the groundwork for the team to move to Raw.
The Shield vs. The New Day
One of my favorite matches of the night that could have easily fell into mediocrity. However, the New Day and the Shield played it well, more specifically by adding some innovation to their original moves and playing some mind games that left the crowd sitting on the edge of their seats! My rating for this match 8/10.
Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown Women’s Match
Even though the match played out exactly as I knew it would, Asuka is one of the most entertaining wrestlers on the roster today. I loved the fact that she was the last one remaining, and they did manage to keep some of the suspense in there.
In addition to letting Asuka shine, there were some highlights for Tamina and Nia Jax too. Honestly, I would love to see a match between these two. Shame they are on separate brands at the moment, but it could be an idea for the future
I give the Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown women’s match a 7/10. The only reason I don’t give a higher score is a large number of botched pitfalls and overall sloppiness. Despite that, still one of the best matches on the card.
The Miz vs. Baron Corbin
I hate to say this since Miz is one of my favorite performers on the Raw roster, but this match was bad. It had little to do with the Miz though because watching Baron Corbin is a little bit like watching paint dry.
Don’t get me wrong, I am actually rooting for Corbin, because he could become one of the great ones. Unfortunately, Corbin is such an uninteresting character, especially when it comes to his in-ring wrestling techniques.
Unfortunately, I would have to give this match a 4.5/10. Miz kept me entertained, but Baron Corbin made me want to take a toilet break. I know he can do better, I just wonder why we aren’t getting it. Still, the Miz saved this match somewhat; this includes Maryse at ringside.
The Bar vs. The Usos
I was a little disappointed in this match, mainly because of the painfully slow pace in the beginning of the match. The slow pace continued for some time but picked up near the end. Still, the slow beginning does not make sense, considering each of the athletes in this match is known for their speed, ability, as well as strength.
But maybe I’m a little too critical, especially since these guys put on a pay-per-view worthy match. I give their match a sturdy 7/10 since the slow pace did cause me to feel a little bored. Nevertheless, the match did not disappoint in its entirety.
Alexa Bliss Vs. Charlotte
Honestly, this is one of the matches I remember best. Even though it was a given that Alexa would lose to athletically superior Charlotte, Alexa definitely showed massive improvement in the ring.
Given the improvements of Alexa Bliss, the athleticism of Flair, and the amazing match they put on, I put this match on 9/10. I only deducted one point, since Alexa could use just a little more fine-tuning in the ring to find herself, but man this girl has improved!
Styles Vs. Brock Lesnar
I am feeling somewhat surprised at myself writing this, but Brock Lesnar actually made an effort for this match. At the start, I thought it was going to be another Brock Lesnar suplex fest and a 5-minute match. However, AJ Styles seems to have managed to get a good match out of a man who stopped trying for several years.
So, Lesnar, you’ve pleasantly surprised me with the effort. You even sold some of AJ’s moves, so I am quite happy with it. However, I don’t agree that Styles was beaten after just one F5. That is the only negative I have. So, I give this match a 9/10.
Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown Men’s Match
Even though this was the match I had the highest expectations for, it also turned out to be the most disappointing. Each side was stacked with some of the biggest WWE superstars, yet they failed to deliver the exhilarating match we all know they can put down.
One of the worst things about this match? The Triple H betrayal of Angle, only to turn on Shane. Honestly, nobody had a clue what was going on. While in some cases, this can be a good thing. However, in this case it pulled the match down. Unfortunately, this leads me to give this match a 6/10.
