Ronda Rousey And Asuka Should Not Meet – For Now

Well, it happened. Ronda Rousey is in WWE.

I have to give it to both WWE and Rousey. I was extremely worried that WWE would just use the women’s Royal Rumble as a vehicle to push Rousey, but they didn’t and I’m very grateful for it. I’m also pleasantly surprised that Rousey has signed a full-time WWE contract. I always assumed that if she ever made the jump it would be on a strict PPV-only basis, a la Brock Lesnar. It’s still too early to definitively say that that won’t be the case, but I’m cautiously optimistic and doing my best to give Rousey a chance to prove herself. (Yes, despite being Ronda Rousey she still needs to prove herself within WWE.)

All that being said, I sincerely hope she doesn’t prove herself at Asuka’s expense.

What’s The Next Step?

After witnessing last night’s wordless exchange between Rousey and Asuka, the winner of the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble, it sure seemed like Rousey was indicating that she wants to challenge Asuka for her right to take on the women’s champion of her choosing at WrestleMania.

Quite frankly, that would be a load of B.S. (and Asuka was right to slap Rousey’s hand away). Asuka is the most dominate performer in WWE right now, man or woman, with the longest undefeated streak in company history. I couldn’t care less that Ronda Rousey was once upon a time the baddest woman inside the octagon; she hasn’t worked for or earned anything in WWE yet, and she sure as hell doesn’t deserve to line-jump over Asuka.

Thankfully, it looks like Rousey vs. Asuka won’t be happening anytime soon. Instead, rumor has it that WWE wants Asuka to face Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women’s Championship while Rousey will take on Charlotte for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Not only does this make a boatload more sense given Charlotte and Rousey’s statuses as the leaders of opposing groups of Four Horsewomen, but it leaves Asuka’s historic Rumble win – and her undefeated streak – intact.

There’s also another report, per the Wrestling Observer, that WWE doesn’t want Rousey in the title picture just yet. Instead, they want Stephanie McMahon and Triple H vs. Rousey and The Rock at WrestleMania 34. However, due to insurance reasons regarding movies The Rock has agreed to film it’s uncertain whether he’ll be able to wrestle.

But whether it’s Rousey vs. Charlotte or Rousey in a tag match, what matters here is that WWE seems to recognize that Asuka is far too big a deal to have a relative outsider swoop in and steal her glory. Don’t get me wrong — I’d like to see Rousey vs. Asuka. But not anytime soon.
