In a move I’d love to see WWE emulate, Ring of Honor adds a new championship.

Specifically, over the weekend during the usual Ring of Honor taping on Saturday, Tony Khan made an appearance.

And with his appearance came a special announcement. Hot on the heels of ROH’s final major show for the year (Final Battle), Khan declared that the brand would now have a Women’s Television Championship.

Admittedly, beyond the announcement, details surrounding the new title remain scarce.

However, it is hard not to get excited about a secondary women’s championship, because these are not all that common.

I’ve long said WWE needs titles for the women that are equivalent to the main world championships on both RAW and SmackDown.

Sure, getting the women’s tag titles was fine…but give the women a second singles title.

What is even more interesting is that, when you compare WWE and Ring of Honor, you would probably say that one group of women needed a second title more than the other.

And the other would probably be the ROH locker room.

The reality is one company just has more depth than the other right now. But, the ROH roster is worthy of a second title.

Names like Taya Valkyrie, Nyla Rosa and Marina Shafir are waiting…to name just a few.

But what one lacks in depth, it is now making up for in opportunities.

While Athena (the former Ember Moon in WWE) holds the ROH women’s title, now there is another to go around.

What remains unknown is how the first ever ROH Women’s Television Champion will be crowned.

If I were a betting person-and I am not-it would seem likely that the announcement of the new title will lead to the announcement of a tournament.

That is a win-win because it is a viable way to determine the new champion, plus it usually helps fill a good bit of television time.

And who knows, maybe there will be some free agents in the mix to help spice up the as-yet-unannounced tournament.
