John Cena’s road to WrestleMania might be unclear, but that just means speculation is running wild! Fans are guessing and fantasy-booking left and right about a possible opponent for the veteran at WrestleMania. Now, it would seem like his opponent might be revealed, and it is not the Undertaker!
Even though Cena put out a challenge to the Undertaker on Monday Night Raw, the Undertaker is retired. Of course, this leaves the path open for other opponents to take up the challenge. One of the rumored choices at the moment is Rey Mysterio!
Returning at the Royal Rumble
Rey Mysterio appeared recently on WWE television since he was one of the surprise participants in the 2018 Royal Rumble. Shortly afterward, Mysterio gave an interview, stating that a return to the WWE is likely.
Working at WrestleMania Match
Breaking: Per WWE sources, Rey Mysterio is backstage working out details tonight at SmackDown for a match at WrestleMania. The rumored opponent is John Cena.
— Justin Barrasso (@JustinBarrasso) February 28, 2018
According to Justin Barrasso, WWE sources revealed that Rey Mysterio was backstage at SmackDown yesterday, working out the details for his WrestleMania match with John Cena. If correct, Cena’s opponent for WrestleMania might be revealed officially sooner than we might think. Of course, Justin Barrasso is a reporter for Sports Illustrated, so the validity of his claims might be spot on! Though Barrasso has had a tendency in the past to speculate a bit too much.
Some are disputing that Mysterio was backstage, but are confirming that negotiations between Rey and WWE are on-going.
Cena and Mysterio have faced each other before, but it has been a while. The previous time Mysterio met Cena was in 2011 during Raw, Cena defeated Mysterio for his WWE Championship the night CM Punk his surprise return with his own WWE title.
Loving It!
I am far from neutral when it comes to Rey Mysterio since he is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. The prospect of him returning to the WWE makes me excited because it could potentially lead to a match with AJ Styles. Even better, if Chris Jericho returns to the WWE as well, there could be a triple threat with my three favorite wrestlers in the whole world!
Another great thing about a WrestleMania match for Mysterio is the fact that he never put on a bad match, much like AJ Styles. So, having Mysterio on the card for WrestleMania is undoubtedly a smart move by the WWE. Wait and see!
