The rumors that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is running for President have just been a joke and idle chatter the last few months. The Rock did mention in an interview in May that he wouldn’t be opposed to running and that it was something he thought about.
Johnson doesn’t hesitate when I ask him whether he honestly might one day give up his life as the highest-paid movie star on earth to run for president. “I think that it’s a real possibility.”
But the talk of Rock running just got a bit more real. An organization has officially filed with the FEC with the purpose of encouraging The Brahma Bull to run for President.
More via The Hill:
“Run the Rock 2020,” the name of the official organization, was filed on behalf of Johnson with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Sunday, according to FEC records.
The paperwork was filed by a man named Kenton Tilford under a West Virginia address. Tilford’s connection to Johnson and his motivation for filing the organization is not clear.
To pour a bit of water on this, anyone can file with the FEC for any cause. They don’t have to be affiliated with or even know the potential candidate. It seems unlikely that Tilford is associated with The Rock at all. However, this will get people talking.
We’ve documented in the past why The Rock would be a good (and bad) choice for President. While he certainly has more charisma than about any politician in recent memory, his lack of experience might turn him away. Another factor working against him would be the massive hit his popularity would take during the run. Running for the Presidency turns every candidate into a polarizing figure. Half the country will love the Rock, the other will be instantly clamoring for his impeachment.
But is it possible The Rock could transcend that? Does he have the skill and charm to bring this country together? I doubt it. Despite what pundits want you to think, America is not in an unprecedented time of divisiveness. Remember, we once fought a CIVIL WAR in this country. Even before that, our Founding Fathers hated each other so much that they would create hideous lies about the others in political attacks.
The Rock couldn’t bring back a united country because we have never existed as one. The Rock has also made a lot of controversial statements in the past as well.
