Penn State wrestling is the top program in the nation. However, it seems like their staff and players are feeling their grip on the top spot loosening due to the power name, image, and likeness money is having in the sport.

Heading into the week, Penn State wrestling remains the No. 1 team in the latest NWCA rankings. Following a dominant 39-0 win over Michigan this weekend. The 11-0 team is well positioned to complete a national championship four-peat for the third time in the last 20 years.

However, for as great as things are going on the mat, the program took a loss in the recruiting wars recently. After months of visits and meetings, Bishop McCort’s super-prospect Bo Bassett finally chose the college he will compete for in 2026.

But the Pennsylvania native did not choose the Nittany Lions. Instead, he is headed to Iowa. It was a surprise choice that has led to huge speculation Bassett is receiving an NIL deal from the Hawkeyes that could be worth as much as $10 million.

It has created a narrative that Penn State wrestling may lose its spot as the top program in college wrestling. Head coach Cael Sanderson recently claimed, “We’re not going to get anybody because of NIL money.” That only fueled that growing idea. However, top star Carter Starocci took to social media recently with a bold claim about the influence of NIL money.

“Don’t forget fellas, you can’t buy a national title. Those are earned. Have a good night,” Starocci wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The statement sends a loud and clear message to programs around the country that are trying to catch up with Penn State by using NIL money. Including top rivals the Iowa Hawkeyes. Nevertheless, the power of NIL money is undeniable. And it has had a huge impact on NCAA DI football and basketball.

It seems like a matter of time before PSU has to follow the trends and make the most out of the practice or be left behind.
