WCW fan-favorite Buff Bagwell revealed in a new documentary this week that he recently had much of his right leg amputated due to complications from a previous car accident.
In a post on the YouTube channel of former WWE star Maven Huffman, Bagwell’s preparation for surgery is chronicled, as well as details on the car crash from 2020. The long-time wrestler explained that while driving under the influence, he crashed through the wall of a mall bathroom in Georgia.
He suffered various injuries, including a broken nose. But the worst was to his leg. He explained that in the crash, he completely destroyed his knee. But, just getting a replacement wasn’t an option because you need a kneecap for such a surgery. His was no longer intact. With his damaged leg not properly healing, and over 30 surgeries to save his leg, Bagwell decided that amputation was his preferred option.
It seems like a shocking choice. But he explained that more surgery only had a 20% success rate, and his limb would have remained permanently straight as well. However, after seeing videos of amputees being able to have a good way of life and be active, the wild decision made far more sense.
During the 1990s, Buff Bagwell was a favorite of many wrestling fans who watched WCW. When the company was purchased by WWE in 2000, he was one of the few who made the switch over immediately to the competition. However, he flamed out weeks after his debut and never again competed in a major wrestling company.
Bagwell has dealt with substance abuse issues in the years since. While he admits he is not sober, his health and life are much improved after meeting his current wife.
