Multi-time world champion Alberto Del Rio’s post-WWE career hit a new low this week. After he was suspended by a Mexican sports commission for trying to attack fans at an AAA event.
Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio broke the mold for Mexican wrestlers in WWE. Despite being much smaller than most performers in the company, the WCW greats were so talented that their popularity and money-making potential were undeniable. That is why former WWE boss Vince McMahon had no choice but to make the pair some of his top stars during their primes.
They made WWE boatloads of money and expanded the brand even further with Spanish-speaking audiences. Since then, the company is always looking for the next big Mexican or Latin star. And McMahon thought he had it Alberto Del Rio. He had so much confidence in him that he even had him with the 2011 Royal Rumble and would go on to be a two-time WWE and World Champion. However, he never really caught on with fans and he was eventually cut after seven years in the company.
Alberto Del Rio hurls a chair at a fan during AAA event
His career since then has been a mixed bag including a run as an ambassador for MMA company Combate Global and an ugly divorce from fellow former WWE star Paige, AKA Saraya. Most recently he has been busy competing in his native Mexico for AAA. But that run will be put on hold after a stunning incident at a recent event.
“The Tijuana commission suspended Alberto Del Rio for 180 days. For his role in an incident on Friday at the Auditorio,” X account Rob Viper claimed this week. “AAA has 2 TV tapings coming up in Baja California. But those are in Ensenada & Rosarito so I don’t think it affects those. I haven’t seen the full match. But in the clip going around Alberto appears heated at someone in the crowd post-match.
“He tries to hop the guardrail but isn’t able so he circles to a place he can get over. He then throws a chair at someone off-camera as security intervenes. Another fan seeing this then throws a chair hitting Alberto in the head. Which starts a slight melee with people throwing things. One story going around is an old lady got hit by a flying chair at some point & ended up in hospital.”
Footage of the wild moment can be found above. The WWE alum certainly seemed enraged by someone in the crowd and was certainly looking to inflict some violent retribution on them. It will be interesting to see how the incident affects the 47-year-old’s career. Which was already on life support in recent years.
