A new report reveals that one of AEW’s most prominent stars over the last year could hit wrestling free agency later this year.
AEW had a rough 2024. After quickly rising to prominence in the years following the company’s debut in 2019, the company seemed to hit new lows last year. Crowd sizes were a fraction of what they used to be. Ratings were way down from their peak. And the company’s storytelling seemed to be scatterbrained.
However, over the first few months of 2025, things seemed to be getting a bit better. Television ratings have ticked up a bit, and crowds are returning to AEW events in smaller venues. Several performers deserve credit for the turnaround. One of them is former AEW women’s champion Mariah May.
The British talent has been one of the anchors of the women’s division for the last year. And has been one half of, arguably, the promotion’s best feud in 2025 against former pal Toni Storm. However, this could also be her last few months with the company if AEW doesn’t lock her into a new deal soon.
Could Mariah May make the jump from AEW to WWE in 2025?
On Tuesday, Fightful reported that several AEW sources informed them May’s contract is set to expire this year.
“Fightful Select has learned that a number of staff, wrestlers, and higher-ups believe that former AEW World Champion Mariah May is in a contract year,” the outlet revealed. “Specifically, those that we’ve spoken to in AEW believe that her deal is up in the Summer.”
The last year has seen a mass exodus of AEW talent to WWE. Ethan Page, Shawn Spears, Penta, Ricky Starks, and Rey Fenix are a few of the stars that have or are rumored to switch sides to the top company in the industry. There is little doubt that WWE would be interested in May. A performer who is just entering her prime and has a lot of experience.
AEW certainly has the money to bring her back. The big question is if she prefers to stay loyal to her current home or if the draw of WWE and a good offer will be too much to pass on.
