Did Young Bucks Blow Opportunity For AEW To Re-Sign Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo?

A new report makes it seem like AEW might have had a better chance to re-sign Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo if the Young Bucks had not been MIA from recent television tapings.

Despite Tony Khan’s denials, AEW has had a rough 2024. While they made major additions to the roster when they signed Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada, and Mercedes Mone earlier this year, TV ratings and ticket sales have delivered record lows this year.

There have also been various reports of dissatisfaction among the ranks in the AEW locker room. And it has led to what seems like a mini-mass exodus from the roster. Matt and Jeff Hardy couldn’t come to terms on a new deal and returned to TNA. And Ethan Page and Shawn Spears both jumped ship to NXT.

There have also been reports that youngsters Hook and Daniel Garcia are not locks to re-sign. Ricky Starks seems WWE-bound once his contract expires in the coming months. Plus, over the last week, various reports have stated that the Lucha Bros. — Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo — do not intend to re-sign and will join WWE very soon.

The Fenix and Zero Miedo news has surprised many since it seemed like they would be AEW lifers. However, another new rumor claims that the Young Bucks might have had an opportunity to persuade them to stay, but were nowhere to be found at recent TV tapings.

“[The Young Bucks] haven’t been [at TV], because I know Pentagon and Fenix wanted to talk to them, and they weren’t there because of whatever,” Wrestling Observer reporter Dave Meltzer said Friday (h/t Wrestle Purists). “I did hear a lot about the Pentagon and Fenix stuff, and essentially I think Pentagon didn’t wanna stay, and Fenix wanted to be loyal to his brother. And that’s kinda it.“

Who knows if the Young Bucks would have been able to change Penta El Zero Miedo’s mind, but not even being there to attempt it is confusing. They are one of the few Vice Presidents available for the company, so their absence from tapings is very surprising.
