During a new interview, AEW star Mercedes Mone took wrestling fans to task for their recent tribalism and claimed they are “not living in the real world.”

This is a big weekend for the woman formerly known as Sasha Banks. After signing with the promotion in March, Mone will finally make her in-ring debut for the company on Sunday at Double or Nothing. Not only will it be her first match for AEW but it will also be for the TBS championship.

Ahead of this weekend’s pay-per-view event, Mone made headlines during a conversation with The Ringer when she confidently claimed that she was the best women’s wrestler of all time. It was a bold statement that unsurprisingly received a large amount of backlash on social media from fans already underwhelmed with her short run in AEW.

However, in a separate interview on Friday for US Magazine, the multi-time WWE champion took aim at wrestling fans on the internet and blasted them for the current tribalism in the fanbase between WWE and AEW supporters. Telling them to get off their phones and get in the real world.

“A lot of things just trail from the internet. People are just so in their phones. Going on the internet and bragging and complaining and they’re not actually living in the real world,” said Mone. “When they come out into the real world and they actually go to wrestling shows and enjoy things with wrestling fans, they know that this is all just so much fun.”

“… People just like to drag things and be mean on the Internet just to be mean on the Internet. When they come to these shows, it’s a whole different feeling.”

Mone may have a point, but attacking the fans who watch the shows, buy the pay-per-views, and the tickets is never a smart move in any industry. Luckily for her, she seems to be transitioning to a heel character on AEW TV and the comments could work to her character’s advantage in the coming weeks.
