AEW World Champ Jon Moxley Goes Public About Frustration With Company’s Creative Dysfunction

In a surprise interview, AEW World Champion Jon Moxley pulled back the curtain on long-rumored frustration with the company’s creative direction.

Like a wrestling phoenix, AEW quickly rose to prominence after its debut in 2019. They were the alternative the industry needed after WWE and Vince McMahon grew lazy and erratic after winning the Monday night wars of the 1990s and early 2000s against WCW. They packed in arenas and seemed to do everything that WWE wouldn’t.

However, there has been a shift in the last couple of years. With McMahon no longer in the promotion, WWE is in the midst of a serious hot streak as they give their massive audience everything they wanted and hoped for over the last decade. However, when it comes to AEW, they have lost their momentum in a major way and seem lost creatively.

Some storylines seem half-baked. And the same random aborted storylines that plagued WWE for years are a consistent issue for both AEW talent and fans. Unsurprisingly, it has led to an exodus of wrestlers moving to the competition. Due to frustration with being underutilized despite the company having several hours of TV each week.

For the most part, the frustration has been kept quiet and is only revealed in various industry rumors. However, in a new interview with the New York Post, the man once known as Dean Ambrose revealed a worrisome backstage story about how decision-makers in the company viewed talent on the roster outside the top stars.

“This individual said, ‘Well, it’s the bottom of the card; it doesn’t matter,’” Jon Moxley said. “Can you imagine saying that? ‘Like, you’re f***ing fired. Yeah, you’re f***ing fired. Go work at Sunglass Hut. You should be f***ing pistol-whipped for saying that. Everybody that’s on the top was at one time on the bottom. That’s how it works.

“You climb the ladder. You see a lot of frustration and confusion from some of these talents because there is no f***ing ladder. They don’t know what to do. They’re kind of just wandering in the desert,” he said. “We’re gonna grab them by the shoulder and were gonna walk ‘em.”

Moxley is hoping his recent storyline with the Blackpool Combat Club is just the beginning of major changes to come in the company. However, judging by recent AEW ratings, it seems like the company has already lost a huge chunk of the audience it once had and they aren’t interested in coming back.
