Dave Meltzer Blasts AEW For ‘Dangerous’ Matches At Revolution Despite Being Behind Popular Star Ratings System

In a surprising moment, Wrestling Observer reporter Dave Meltzer questioned the risk taking in matches at AEW Revolution. Despite many of the performers likely chasing positive grades in his popular match ratings.

On Sunday night, AEW returned to pay-per-view with the 2025 edition of Revolution. The company’s latest PPV featured several major matchups, including AEW Champion Jon Moxley putting his gold on the line against wrestling legend Cope. To the surprise of no one, many of the bouts on the card were highly entertaining.

However, in the hours since the event, the standout matches were the ones featuring bitter rivalries between Toni Storm vs. Mariah May and Will Ospreay vs. Kyle Fletcher. Both clashes were hyper violent affairs that saw a copious amount of blood shed. Yet, those were just the most notable in another high-flying and risk-taking event from the company.

All of the talent performing were likely aiming to steal the show. And get a five-star rating from legendary wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer. However, despite always having favorable thoughts about the quality of AEW matches, he actually questioned the approach of talent at this weekend AEW Revolution.

“These guys are going, ‘We got to top ourselves’ and it sets a dangerous direction. Because guys are going in there and working like it’s their last match for weeks,” Meltzer said on a new edition of Wrestling Observer Radio after Revolution. “They are just working to have these incredible matches and to do so they are taking so many risks.”

It is pretty surprising for Meltzer of all people to suggest AEW talent are being too dangerous in matches. Since he rates so many of their bouts highly in his star ratings. But if he thinks things are going too far, that says a lot about the level wrestlers are pushing toward to be better than previous matches.

Meltzer revealed there weren’t any serious injuries after the event. However, he did note many performers on the card were “banged up” following Revolution.
