Pro wrestling is full of crazy ideas, so here’s one more: could Shane McMahon be out to cross Tony Khan and AEW?

We have not seen Shane McMahon in a WWE ring since he comically got injured during a WrestleMania 39 segment and had to be bailed out by Snoop Dog. The prodigal son of WWE has been largely radio silent amidst the chaos that ended his father’s WWE reign. Shane’s time with WWE wrapped up on a series of sour notes too, from the already mentioned injury to his controversial booking of himself in the Royal Rumble. He’s still a McMahon, so you’d think WWE would always have a place for him, but who knows how strained things are between Shane, Stephanie and brother in law Triple H?

Which leads us to that somewhat recent meeting between Tony Khan and Shane McMahon. Khan is, to put it nicely, in over his head. That AEW has survived five years is as much a testament to Khan’s father’s deep pockets as anything else. Crowd sizes are often stunningly small, and the TV deal is still a work in progress. Just as bad? While Tony has brought in a steady stream of WWE cast-offs and high priced free agents, none have provided a boost for business. He has yet to find his “Hulk Hogan to WCW” signing, and some wonder if he ever will.

Upon learning of the meeting with Shane McMahon, many thought that could be a turning point. Shane knows plenty about the business, more than Tony Khan could imagine. Perhaps if he brought McMahon in and worked with him, AEW could get to that next level. But what if that wasn’t Shane’s intent at all? Former WWE and WCW writer Vince Russo tossed out a crazy idea. What if Shane McMahon was out to cross Tony Khan and AEW? Khan loves his big names. He’s sometimes a bit too chatty. As Russo suggested, what if Shane’s meeting with Khan wasn’t a recruiting visit, but rather McMahon gathering any and all intel he could.

But why? Well, Vince McMahon screwed himself out of WWE. But he’s still got a lot of money and a willingness to not give up. Could it be that Shane and Vince are once again working together? Russo suggests that perhaps Shane McMahon was gathering all he could about the inner workings of current and future AEW deals. Specifically so that Shane and Vince could then go to say, Warner Bros-Discovery and suggest that a new wrestling company, led by a McMahon, was coming soon. The father and son offer the television giant a better deal than AEW, and the rest is history.

Is it happening? No one knows. But such a move is something you absolutely would expect from Vince McMahon. Plus, for all his faults and the current legal entanglements, a new wrestling promotion lead by Shane and Vince McMahon would certainly have people paying attention. And, the longer the television deal takes to get finalized? Plus the longer we wait to see if Shane McMahon is All Elite? Those delays will just add fuel to Vince Russo’s crazy, but not so crazy idea.
