A popular homegrown AEW talent is more seriously considering a jump into free agency than originally thought.
AEW has built its brand by using many former stars from WWE and NJPW. However, the company has also taken a few darlings from the independent circuit and turned them into household names. The most notable of which is former AEW World Champion MJF.

One under-the-radar talent who took their brand to new heights under the AEW banner is New York native Daniel Garcia. The Buffalo product has become a worthwhile part of the roster over the last year. And oddly enough, just in time for a potential jump into free agency. However, recent reports made it seem that when Garcia’s contract does expire this summer he is likely to re-sign.
Well, not so fast. A new report from Wrestling Observer wrestling business insider Bryan Alvarez this week seemed to open the door to Daniel Garcia testing his value in free agency this summer.
“What I know is that when he did that angle [where he was attacked by MJF] they were aware that he might not be back, and so the angle was done in case he doesn’t come back,” Alvarez said. And if he does come back then they’ve got a storyline feud with MJF.
“I know he had been thinking about it, or he had told people he had been thinking about what he was going to do, which he should do. I don’t think it’s 100% that he’s coming back but I don’t think that he has re-signed or decided to leave yet. But that was one of the reasons he was taken out in storyline.”
Could Daniel Garcia make the jump to WWE?
Daniel Garcia has become a favorite among fans for his abilities as a wrestler. As well as the unique dance that took his popularity to new heights over the last year. At only 25 he has a lot of potential. However, AEW has not created a strong reputation for talent development.
That is why he seems like a perfect fit for WWE’s NXT brand if he tests free agency. The recent success of other former AEW mid-card performers like Ethan Page and Shawn Spears is likely sending a message to many young AEW talents. That they can also go to the brand and make an immediate impact.
Chances are he stays with AEW, but Daniel Garcia will have good options if he looks for greater opportunities elsewhere.
