As we wind down 2017, we will be looking back at the 20 best (and worst) moments of the year in the wrestling world. Number 19 comes from August in Mexico and is a time when wrestling got a bit too real.
20. Scott Steiner’s epic press conference
While most people were focusing on McGregor-Mayweather, the wrestling world had at least one eye on Mexican promotion AAA’s Triplemania. The promotion’s version of Wrestlemania is the culmination of a year’s worth of storylines and often includes a career-defining “Apuestas” match that requires the loser to unmask. This is considered a big deal in Mexico where the identities of masked wrestlers are kept secret by government statute. Lucha legend Dr. Wagner Jr was forced to unmask after losing to Psycho Clown in a two out of three falls match.
This should have been the signature moment of the event. But instead, Triplemania is mired in controversy. During a luchadora match Mexican wrestler Sexy Star began working stuff with the fellow ladies in the match. This culminated in Sexy Star putting GFW/Impact star Rosemary in an armbar and refusing to release the hold after Rosemary tapped out. The end result was Rosemary separating her shoulder.
The Wrestling World Reacts to Sexy Star’s “shoot”
The outrage in the wrestling world has been universal. Sexy Star took liberties and intentionally injured a fellow worker. THis is not OK. Wrestlers of both genders came out strong against her actions.
Hot take: if you're unprofessional enough and enough of a garbage human to deliberately injure someone, GTFO. Don't need ya here. kthanksbye

Sexy Star will never set foot in one of my locker rooms. I hope others follow suit.

DISGUSTING is just one word. We put our lives in each other's hands. So unprofessional. This is how you work yourself out of the business https://t.co/aELhRMO017

It's disappointing to see a "professional" be so careless and wreckless with a fellow worker… All I can say is: KARMA. https://t.co/j892olqUJh

Several American promotions have already canceled appearances by Sexy Star, though it remains to be seen if she’ll be punished by AAA. She’s still a very popular star in Mexico despite this and Mexican fans and promotions have different sensibilities when it comes to in-ring work and safety.
We’re with you, Rosemary. This isn’t OK. Sexy Star needs to come clean, and apologize. Wrestling is dangerous enough as it is. There’s no reason to be so hurtful and intentionally violent. Especially at the end of a match when you are using an already dangerous hold.
