For Jon Jones, UFC 309 presents quite the night of possibility. The reigning UFC heavyweight champion will defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic in a bout a year long in the making.
While rumors continue to swirl around that Jones could retire after the performance no matter the outcome, “Bones” is looking to exact a little bit of redemption if the opportunity presents itself.

Flash back to 2009 when Jones was handed a DQ loss after landing an illegal elbow on Matt Hamill. Since, the move has been taken off the banned list, something Jones is very excited for.
“I accept the move more than ever now. I’ve been training extensively on different 12-6 elbow attacks,” he told Kevin Iole recently (thanks to MMA Mania for the quotes). “It’s funny because it’s been such a no-no move so you train yourself not go to there. Now that I’m able to use that strike, it’s very devastating and opens up so many more options.”
Jones, a native of New York, will be competing in his home state for the first time in his career. He has not scored a knockout or TKO finish since dropping Alexander Gustafsson in 2018.
“I’m excited to be one of the first UFC athletes to legally display it at Madison Square Garden,” Jones said.
UFC 309 also features Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler and Bo Nickal vs. Paul Craig.
