The MMA world has been in a constant state of bliss when it comes to trying to put together dream fights. The current one has reigning UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones taking on light heavyweight titleholder Alex Pereira.
Unlike some previous ones such as George St-Pierre vs. BJ Penn and Anderson Silva vs. Jones, this one has some legs. That is because the UFC has made it somewhat of a priority to put matches like this together with the creation of the “BMF” title.

We’ve Nate Diaz face Jorge Masvidal, Dustin Poirier battle Justin Gaethje and Gaethje face Max Holloway. “Bones,” who is set to defend his own title vs. Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 this weekend, wants another BMF title created.
“It’d be cool to fight over the heavyweight championship. But I would also willingly give up the heavyweight championship,” Jones told SportsNet (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quotes). “I walked away from the light heavyweight championship. I’d love to walk away from this one as well on top, on my own terms. Fighting Pereira for the ‘BMF’ belt, that would be cool. We both have two belts in two classes and the night we fought we’d both be fighting for our third “
Jones has the right idea with this one. It would create quite the sense of something that has never happened in the UFC before. Along with Pereira, the two have been nearly unstoppable as they travel through middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight.
He continues to brush off the idea of unifying the belts with interim champion Tom Aspinall. Jones called into question the move by the UFC to even create a title like that.
“When you have a dominant champion that’s been around as long as I have, there was no reason to put an interim championship belt out there,” he said. “That’s the repercussion of Madison Square Garden last year. Sergei (Pavlovich) and Aspinall shouldn’t have been fighting for an interim title in the first place. They should have just been a replacement fight; a main event fight.”
