New UFC Rumor Claims Joanna Jedrzejczyk To End Her Retirement And Create First Women’s BMF Belt

Is legendary UFC fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk planning to end her retirement? An interesting new rumor claims she is seriously pondering the idea and it would be to win a new women’s BMF belt.

Former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey gets a lot of credit for being a trailblazer for female mixed martial arts in the UFC. And understandably so since she became a mainstream star. However, for those old-school MMA fans who were harder to sway, Joanna Jedrzejczyk was a trendsetter.

Unlike Rousey, the Polish fighter was a highly skilled pugilist who was well-rounded and didn’t lean on one specific style to win her fights. It is why she would go on to become the UFC’s first strawweight champion and hold on to the belt for over two years. Defending it five times.

She is a true UFC legend and her sizable fanbase was disappointed when she walked away from the sport two years ago. Well, those supporters could get some good news about Jedrzejczyk in the near future.

On Sunday, former strawweight champion Jessica Andrade spoke to MMAFighting and revealed some interesting plans she has. If she is victorious over Natalia Silva this Saturday at UFC Vegas 97, she will call for a title fight. But not for the strawweight or flyweight belt, but instead a new women’s BMF title. And she already has some opponents in mind.

“I’ve been talking to Joanna and she said she’d come back. If it’s for this [BMF] belt, she would come back,” Andrade said. “I think that would be a good fight. Joanna, or maybe Angela Hill — who never walks away from a fight and is always there fighting everyone. Or Valentina [Shevchenko]. Any of those girls would be great, but I think it would be special if it’s Joanna. It would be better.”

The Brazilian star also revealed that this new BMF title would be competed for at 125 pounds. Not at 115, where both women held UFC titles. Joanna Jędrzejczyk has not fought since a knockout loss to current strawweight champ Weili Zhang in June of 2022. It was one of five losses in her last seven bouts. The former champion was inducted into the UFC Hall-of-Fame this year.

Since BMF fights are often matchups of stars not in contention for a traditional belt, a rematch between Jędrzejczyk and Andrade for the new title makes sense. The Polish legend defeated Andrade by unanimous decision in 2017 at UFC 211.
