The Dustin Poirier next fight news is likely to be quite some time. In fact, there are reports that “The Diamond” could retire after his most recent bout. However, if he does decide to continue competing, here are three opponent options for Poirier in Conor McGregor, Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje.

Who will Dustin Poirier next fight be against?

After coming up short of winning the UFC lightweight title vs. Islam Makhachev, we have reached a crossroads in the career of Poirier. While he is not likely to compete for gold anytime soon, there are still some fun and exciting matchups out there for him to take.

  • Notorious: The rivalry has been hot and heavy between these two, as Poirier owns two wins vs. McGregor from 2021. However, in 2014, Poirier suffered a first round TKO loss to the former two-division champion.
  • Blessed: How about a rematch for the “BMF” title between Holloway and Poirier? They squared off back in 2019 with Poirier winning the interim lightweight belt with a decision.
  • Highlight: Now that Poirier has put off retirement, how about a rematch of the 2023 thriller? It would also be a way to settle the debate as Poirier won in 2018.

Dustin Poirier vs. Islam Makhachev recap

Seeking to secure the unified title for the first time in his career, Poirier was unable to topple Makhachev. He battled until the fifth and final round where the champion locked in a brabo choke and secured the win. Poirier has also lost title fights to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira – both by submission – since 2019.

What happened: While Makhachev started and finished strong, Poirier did land quite a few strikes on him. In fact, he appeared to be gaining some steam heading into the final round before succumbing to the submission.

The fallout: Even before the fight, Poirier hinted at the idea of retirement. He is 35 years old and has 40 professional mixed martial arts fights on his body now. That includes some all-time classic wars with the best of the best the sport has ever seen.

The roadmap: Fighting for UFC gold is likely off the table for quite some time. That doesn’t mean the “BMF” title should be, though, Poirier has competed for it before, and he makes quite the case to always be in that mix.
