Dustin Poirier recently suggested a mind-blowing BMF tournament idea that UFC CEO Dana White “loves.”
While it seemed silly at first, the UFC’s Baddest Mother F***er title has become a unique tool to put together huge fan-friendly fights outside the title picture. Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal were the pioneers of the title in 2019. And lightweight great Justin Gaethje has helped take it to new heights in a pair of bouts since.

For aging greats who are unlikely to get championship opportunities any time soon, competing for the BMF belt has become a prize worthy of getting into a long training camp for. Plus, the matchups are usually featured clashes on pay-per-view cards and bring added financial benefits.
After coming up short in a title fight in June, former UFC interim lightweight king Dustin Poirier is at a point where the BMF belt is the only title he still has a chance at. That is probably why he recently came up with a BMF tournament idea the UFC would be foolish not to seriously consider.
Dustin Poirier proposes BMF tournament featuring Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway
So, the idea “Diamond” had would see himself, Dan Hooker, Justin Gaethje, and current BMF champion Max Holloway take part in a four-man tourney to decide who is truly the baddest mofo in the UFC. The quartet of fighters all have histories and the matchups would be rematches or even trilogy fights. Furthermore, many of their previous bouts either won or were in contention for Fight of the Year in those years.
It is an idea fight fans would totally be in favor of. And it seems that their boss also welcomes it. Following a new edition of Dana White’s Contender Series on Tuesday, White was asked about Poirier’s proposal. “Sounds fun. Never thought about it but I love it,” he said.
Hooker, Poirier, and Gaethje are all in-between bouts and could be slotted into a possible tournament. However, Holloway has a featherweight title bout at the end of the month. A victory over Ilia Topuria likely throws a massive wrench in those plans. Since Topuria is sure to seek an immediate rematch.
