New Rumor Suggests Arman Tsarukyan Having UFC Title Shot Taken Away Wasn’t Due To Injury Before UFC 311

A UFC veteran and popular podcaster claims Arman Tsarukyan did not lose his lightweight title shot because he missed UFC 311 due to an injury.

Over the last five years, 155-pounder Aman Tsarukyan has quietly turned into one of the best on Earth in his division. The 28-year-old has won four straight and nine of his last 10. Including victories over long-time lightweight stars like Beneil Dariush and former champion Charles Oliviera.

In an era where star power often lands title shots, Tsarukyan earned his championship opportunity at UFC 311 the old-fashioned way. However, at the worst possible time, he suffered a debilitating back injury in the final days of his fight camp. While he tried to battle through it, his weight cut only made it worse and he had to make the tough decision of pulling out of his scheduled bout with Islam Makhachev in Saturday’s main event.

Following the event, UFC boss Dana White was asked if the lightweight star would get a rescheduled date for a title fight. However, the CEO claimed he would not be next in line for the champion. Surprisingly, Tsarukyan was not upset over losing his opportunity and publicly stated his willingness to earn a championship fight again.

Well, popular podcaster and former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub claimed this week, that it was not an injury that cost him a title fight. Instead, it was a near miss on the scales.

Was Arman Tsarukyan going to miss weight at UFC 311?

“I’m going to take you deep waters right now. He had a weight issue, 100% the day before,” Schaub said recently [h/t Low Kick MMA]. “UFC’s number one thing is if you don’t make weight, f*** you. They can’t stand it. You see Dana? Furious at him. He was like, ‘Nope. He’s going to have to earn his way back to a title shot.’

“Then Arman comes out and he’s like, ‘Dana’s right. I’ll do whatever it takes to prove I’m number one. Whether it’s one or two guys, it’s all good.’ That’s a weight issue. That ain’t an injury.”

It is an interesting opinion that does make a lot of sense. Arman Tsarukyan losing a well-earned title opportunity due to an injury seemed completely unfair. Then his quick acceptance of that fact was shocking.

That is why Schaub’s suggestion is believable. Acting as if an injury forced him out of UFC 311 may have been a way for the UFC and the 28-year-old to save face.
