Valentina Shevchenko kept Liz Carmouche at bay and successfully defended her UFC female flyweight title Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night 156.
Shevchenko, who won the vacant title with a decision victory over Joanna Jedrzejczyk last December, claimed her second title defense. In June, she earned a second round head-kick knockout vs. Jessica Eye.
And while this defense did not end in as dramatic fashion for Shevchenko, it did serve both its purpose and as a matter of revenge.
This was the second time that Shevchenko and Carmouche have met, as Carmouche earned a second round victory via TKO in 2010. That bout took place at C3 Fights: Red River Rivalry from Concho, Oklahoma. Related: Valentina Shevchenko Shows Off Her Moves
Perry With Nasty Break, Loss
In the co-main event, Vicente Luque claimed a split decision over Mike Perry, leaving Perry with both a loss and a broken nose for his efforts.
The 27-year-old Luque claimed his sixth consecutive victory since a 2017 loss to top welterweight contender Leon Edwards. Over that stretch, he has earned four knockout, one submission and now one decision win.
Perry fell to just 2-4 over his last six after winning 11 of his first 12 professional fights overall.

On the prelims, Gilbert Burns handed Alexey Kunchenko his first pro loss, claiming a decision in their welterweight matchup. Burns won for the fifth time in his last six fights, while this marked the first defeat for Kunchenko in 21 fights.
Ciryl Gane, Marina Rodriguez, Rogerio Bontorin, Chris Gutierrez, Alex da Silva Coelho and Veronica Macedo all claimed victories.
Gane and Macedo each picked up submission wins, with Bontorin earning a TKO via doctor’s stoppage. Macedo, who submitted Polyana Viana, had the quickest finish of the night in just 69 seconds.
This event marked the first time that the UFC has made a stop in Uruguay, with the card taking place from the Antel Arena in Montevideo. Both the main and prelim cards aired live on ESPN+.
