UFC San Antonio: Alexander Hernandez Gets by Francisco Trinaldo

Alex Hernandez didn’t score the one-sided, decisive win he hoped for at UFC San Antonio, but the rising lightweight did enough to get by Francisco Trinaldo.

Hernandez missed with a head kick right out of the gate and Trinaldo planted a counter left. Both lightweights winged big punches in the ensuing exchanges. The next couple of minutes featured plenty of movement from both men, but not too many strikes. As the final minute of the round began,  Trinaldo scored with a right and then Hernandez took a low blow. Trinaldo attempted a flying knee right before the round ended, but it appeared to miss.

Hernandez fired off a few kicks to begin round two, but once again, there was more movement than strikes. A couple of minutes in, Hernandez attempted a takedown but was denied. After that exchange, Hernandez was cut under his left eye. The remainder of the round featured few striking exchanges, before both men tossed some several shots in the final moments of the frame.

Trinaldo winged a couple of big punches early into round three, but Hernandez countered with a nice right. Hernandez charged at Trinaldo in search of a takedown, but the latter defended well. The next couple of minutes, once more, saw both lightweights looking to counter with minimal volume. Hernandez called Trinaldo on in the final 30 seconds and the latter attempted a late headkick, but no telling strikes landed.

After the final horn, all three judges awarded the fight to Hernandez. The latter was competing for the first time since he was stopped by Donald Cerrone in January.
