For Jared Cannonier, this Saturday night and his main event with Marvin Vettori at UFC on ESPN 47 is a chance to turn some heads.
The two middleweight contenders square off live on ESPN from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
With current division champion Israel Adesanya booked, and a No. 1 contender match also scheduled, Cannonier understands that he has to make a big-time statement vs. Vettori.
“Potentially, but what’s been said has been said,” he said. “I want to perform to the best of my abilities and open some eyes and drop some jaws; maybe break some jaws.
“Show whoever needs to see that I’m ready for my second shot at the title and take the title from Israel.”

This past December, the 39-year-old rebounded from a decision loss to Adesanya for the title by besting Sean Strickland. He now sits at 16-6 overall and 9-6 with the UFC.
Cannonier, Vettori Are Both Top Contenders
The division has been at a sort of log-jam for a few years now, leaving both former contenders Cannonier and Vettori to pick and move through the field.
With that, it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before they came up against one another.
“Feel like it was only a matter of time before we crossed paths,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I’m crossing names off. To a certain degree, you can’t go into any of these fights expecting anything or you’ll be surprised.
“I’m just going to be more open-minded and be prepared for anything that he brings.”
What A Finish Would Mean In This Fight
Anytime you can win by knockout, TKO or submission, it adds some more weight behind your performance.
Cannonier, who has scored a dozen finishes in his career, understands that. In fact, he would like nothing more than to make a little history this weekend.
“It would be nice to get my first submission in the Octagon,” he said. “I just want a finish. Maybe I batter his face until the corner throws in the towel. Considering he hasn’t been finished, I’d like to take that cherry.”
Vettori is 19-6-1 and earned a shot at Adesanya back in 2021, losing by decision. He has gone 2-1 since around a decision setback to former champion and top contender Robert Whittaker.
