UFC In The 2010s: Looking Back At Featherweight Division

Alexander Volkanovski

Right at the start of the decade, the UFC introduced featherweights with Jose Aldo holding the title.

Since that time, the division has continued to grow, with Conor McGregor, Max Holloway and current champion Alexander Volkanovski reigning supreme.

The UFC dissolved the WEC and with it the featherweight division. Aldo was the champion in that promotion, and became the first-ever UFC featherweight champion.

He dominated his way through the weight class before his epic encounter with McGregor, and stunning fall from grace.

The division has been filled with interim champions through the past 10 years, as well.

Alexander Volkanovski

At UFC 245 in late December, Alexander Volkanovski worked his way to the top of the featherweight division.

Volkanovski entered as the challenger, but left with a victory over Max Holloway and the UFC title.

His reign spans just over 100 days.

Max Holloway

For nearly three years, Max Holloway was the man at featherweight.

Holloway won the interim title at UFC 206 in 2016 when he bested Anthony Pettis, earning the undisputed belt in 2017.

He scored three title defenses before falling over Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega and Frankie Edgar.

Jose Aldo

After losing the title, Jose Aldo’s second reign started in 2016 when he topped Frankie Edgar for the interim belt. He was promoted to undisputed champion later that year, holding the belt for 189 days.

As WEC champion, Also was promoted to UFC champion in 2010 and held the title for 1,848 days. He earned defenses over Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, Chad Mendes, Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung, Ricardo Lamas and Mendes again.

Conor McGregor

Like so many in the division, Conor McGregor first held the interim title before unifying the belts.

McGregor topped Chad Mendes at UFC 189 in 2015 and unified the titles with a stunning victory over Jose Aldo. He held the title for 350 days, being stripped of it after winning the lightweight championship.
