The Octagon took over the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia for UFC 284 Saturday night.
Not many gave Alex Volkanovski a chance against Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title in the main event. But the reigning featherweight champion proved them wrong.
Volkanovski battled Makhachev for five rounds and 25 minutes, but was denied his dream of being a double UFC champion. Makhachev retained the title via unanimous decision.
Yair Rodriguez positioned himself for a future unification match with Volkanovski, claiming the interim featherweight title. Rodriguez submitted Josh Emmett in the second round with a triangle choke.
Jack Della Maddalena and Justin Tafa scored first round finishes, while Jimmy Crute and Alonzo Menifield battled to a majority draw.
Maddalena submitted Randy Brown and Tafa knocked out Parker Porter.
On the televised prelims, Modestas Bukauskas, Joshua Culibao, Kleydson Rodrigues and Jamie Mullarkey were all winners, with Culibao and Rodrigues scoring finishes.
Jack Jenkins, Loma Lookboonmee, Blake Bilder and Elves Brenner earned victories on the early prelims. Brenner started the night off with an upset of heavy favorite Zubaira Tukhugov via split decision.
