Many of the fans in attendance at UFC 241 last night in Anaheim were clearly well aware of who Colby Covington is. But, when Nate Diaz was asked about the controversial fighter after his big win, the Stockon star had an interesting response.
The crowd’s reaction to Covington
Covington started walking to his seats during the main card bout between Derek Brunson and Ian Heinisch, and as soon as fans noticed, a chorus of boos rang out. So much so, Heinisch could be heard asking his corner between rounds why the fans were booing. Not long after, the chant “Colby sucks” also made the rounds.
Is Diaz interested in fighting Covington?
Well, following the event, which saw Diaz outscored Anthony Pettis for a decision win, the Stockton fighter was asked about whether he’d be interested in fighting Covington. Here’s what Diaz had to say (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“Who’s it? What weight?” Diaz asked. “I don’t know who that is, so like if we’ve got somebody good to fight.
“If you’ve been here for two weeks and get a little hype show, I don’t give a (expletive).”
How about that for a verbal slight huh? Obviously, chances are Diaz is well aware of who Covington is. But, both of the Diaz brothers have made it clear over the years that they don’t have too much respect for wrestling centric fighters. Further, Diaz wants big time bouts. Would Diaz – Covington be big? Sure. But Diaz – McGregor III would be much, much bigger. A bout with Jorge Masvidal would also be sizeable.
Speaking of Masvidal, in his post-fight interview, Diaz called for a fight with Masvidal. When asked about his call out following the event, the brash fighter said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“You have to recognize who is the best in the game, and it’s not who they say it is,” Diaz said. “It’s who I’m saying it is. It’s the guy who has been winning forever and still on the top of the game. … Who’s the real badass dude in the 170 division? They’re trying to pump up this dude (Askren), and Masvidal goes in there and knocks his ass out, and he’s been in here since I started fighting in 2004, I think. I think he had been there a little longer, and he just did that. So, that’s the best fighter to me, the best martial artist who is still on top of the game.”
Dana White also relayed after the card that of course, he’s on board with Diaz – Masvidal. The UFC President noted that “everyone” would want to see that fight. So, it will be interesting to see if that bout materializes and when.
