The UFC’s lightweight title picture is moving forward, but not in a way most folks likely expected…

UFC President Dana White has informed ESPNĀ that Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier are going to battle for an interim lightweight title on April 13th. The fight will be part of UFC 236 in Atlanta.

White also informed the outlet that Tony Ferguson was offered the bout against Holloway but that he turned it down. “El Cucuy” was not reached for comment.

Holloway (20-3) faced Poirier way back in 2012 and was submitted in the opening round. “Blessed” will head into the rematch riding a 13 fight winning streak and as the featherweight champ.

Poirier (24-5-1) has gone 3-1, with 1 no contest in his last five fights, and is coming off a win over Eddie Alvarez.

So, as noted, this wasn’t a fight that was on many folks’ radars, if anyone’s. But, it’s an intriguing match-up, to say the least. It also comes at a time when not long ago, Poirier made it clear he was extremely unhappy with the lack of movement at 155.
