Donald Cerrone Claims Conor McGregor’s Passed on Fighting Him Multiple Times

Earlier this year, there was a lot of talk about the possibility of Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone fighting. But, according to “Cowboy”, the former champ’s passed on several opportunities to fight him.

Cerrone has expressed an interest in fighting McGregor for a while now, but after he took out Alex Hernandez in January, he ramped up his calls for the bout. McGregor relayed on social media that he was down, and Dana White said he was on board, but nothing every came to pass.

Well, following Cerrone’s  loss (via doctor stoppage) to Tony Ferguson last month, it’s not clear yet who he’ll fight next. But, while talking to MMA Junkie recently, Cerrone had this to say about facing McGregor.

“That’s been so close so many times,” Cerrone said. “The funny thing is, when Diaz fought McGregor, I just fought, and I was flying on that Sunday, and they called me and were like, ‘Hey, do you want the McGregor fight?’ So he turned me down back then, turned me down three or four other times now. It’s crazy to me.

“His last fight, we were supposed to do it, and it just deteriorated. I don’t know, he just won’t sign his end of the deal.”

There’s been speculation that Cerrone – McGregor hasn’t happened, is because the latter won’t sign off on non-headliner status (as the UFC has been going with title fights for pay-per-view cards). Further, some have speculated that the UFC is having trouble coming to terms with McGregor, on account of its new PPV deal with ESPN (White, however, has shot down that theory).

Cerrone also relayed in the aforementioned interview he’s pushing hard for a rematch with Ferguson. So, it will be interesting to see what happens. Ferguson has pretty much-done everything possible at this point to lock up a title shot. So, if he’s not on board with fighting “Cowboy” again, what about Cerrone – Justin Gaethje? Assuming that Gaethje – McGregor can’t get signed either?
