The consensus among combat sports experts is that Floyd Mayweather should cruise to victory, if and when he boxes Conor McGregor, but Dana White continues to say the latter’s got a shot.
As it stands right now, it remains to be see if the long discussed, and highly anticipated bout will happen, but increasingly, it’s looking like it will. In fact, White has said that there’s so much money on that table, he doesn’t see how Mayweather – McGregor won’t take place.
Now, if you’re a big MMA fan, then you know White has some boxing experience himself, and has followed the sport for decades. While appearing recently in a Merry Jane video, the UFC President had this to say about McGregor’s chances against the boxing star (quote via MMA Junkie):
“At the end of the day it’s a fight,” White said. “Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old; Conor McGregor is 27. Conor’s a big dude. Floyd has trouble with southpaws; Conor McGregor is a southpaw. And Conor McGregor hits like a truck. When he hits you, you know it.
“So, in no way, shape or form am I saying Conor McGregor wins this fight. I don’t know. But it’s more interesting than people think it is. … I promise you Conor McGregor will hit him. When they fight (Mayweather) will get hit, and it will be interesting to see what happens.”
White isn’t the only person to express this viewpoint, and there’s no question that McGregor hits very hard, and that he’ll have the size advantage. While we don’t know yet how much the UFC stands to make if this fight becomes a reality, however, some might argue White’s playing the promoter here a bit as well.
If the bout goes down, it’s going to be an edge of your seat kind of evening.
