David Morrell Jr. flexed his might Saturday night, retaining his WBA super middleweight title and remaining unbeaten.
Morrell scored a second round finish over Sena Agbeko in his adopted home of Minneapolis.
The bout was the final one for Showtime Boxing, taking place from The Armory.
“Thank you to my fans for coming to the fight,” Morrell said. “I’m teaching everyone who is number one. I’m ready. I tell everybody, my team, my family…I’m looking forward to next year. For now, I feel happy. Right now, I’m going to go to my house for Christmas and focus on next year.”
A native of Cuba, Morrell moved to 10-0 with nine knockouts by displaying his incredible skills once more. This marked his sixth knockout inside The Armory and came in front of the largest soldout crowd for the event.
The loss dropped Agbeko to 28-3 overall.
“Everybody came out for my fight and it’s still very exciting,” Morrell said. “This is the first time my dad and my mom came to watch me fight, so it’s really special to have them here. It’s my night. It’s my time. It’s my year, and I’m looking forward to a good 2024.”
In the co-main event, Jose Valenzuela knocked out Chris Colbert in a WBA lightweight title-eliminator. The bout was a rematch of a decision won by Colbert over Valenzuela earlier this year.
In the opener, Robert Guerrero picked up his 38th career win with a decision over fellow veteran Andre Berto.
Two fighters who have delivered numerous Fight of the Years throughout their careers, Guerrero and Berto met in a rematch of their memorable 2012 battle that Guerrero won by decision. In the sequel, Guerrero was the busier and more accurate fighter on his way to landing double digit punches in eight of 10 rounds.
In prelims that streamed live, Alberto Puello moved to 2-0 with a victory over Ector Madera, Kyrone Davis topped Cruse Stewart and Lawrence King scored a knockout of Alex Theran.
