For Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Cinco de Mayo was business as usual.
The reigning undisputed super middleweight champion successfully defended his title against Jamie Munguia via decision. The bout headlined the event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas live on DAZN pay-per-view Saturday night.
Alvarez, who moved to 61-2 with the win, had not fought a fellow countryman since 2017. That night it was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. who fell to Alvarez.
Munguia entered the biggest fight of his career unbeaten, as the 27-year-old had won 44 in a row. However, he was unable to match the skill of Alvarez. The champion showed off his power early, flooring Munguia in the fourth.
Alvarez has scored seven successful title defenses. He won the belts back in 2020 with a victory over Callum Smith via decision.
Following a one-off move to light heavyweight to challenge Dmitry Bivol, he returned to the division and has dominated. WIns over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo and now Munguia have followed the decision loss.
However, complaints remain around Alvarez. Will he now take on a top-flight challenger? We shall wait and see.
