O’Shaquie Foster and Robson Conceicao put on a show Saturday for the fans inside the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in New York. The bout for the WBC junior lightweight title aired live on ESPN+.
After 12 rounds of action, Foster prevailed by scores of 115-113 and 115-113, with one giving it to Conceicao by the same final count. Conceicao entered as the reigning champion after besting Foster back in July.
Foster, who moved to 23-3 with the win, was aggressive from the start. He tried to make sure this one would not be closely decided by the scorecards – even though it ultimately was. Conceicao, who fell to 19-3-1 overall, started applying pressure in the middle rounds.
In the 10th, Foster connected, nearly taking the champion off his feet. Conceicao, though, survived, pushing the bout to the distance.
“I thought I had him for a moment,” Foster said (thanks to Boxing Scene for the quotes). “He’s a veteran, been around the game a long time and he knows how to survive.”
Despite the loss, Conceicao reflected strongly on his own performance. He was also complimentary of the new champion.
“I’m happy because I know what I did in the ring,” he said. “I know I did a good job. For me, he’s a good fighter and I can’t speak poorly of him. But I know I did a good job in the ring.”
In the co-main event, Raymon Muratalla improved to 22-0 with his 17th career knockout. Muratalla, one of the top lightweight contenders, finished Jesus Perez in the second round and immediately called for a shot at the title next.
Bryce Mills downed Mike Ohan, getting a stoppage in the fifth, while Abraham Nova and Humberto Galindo battled to a split draw. Jahi Tucker knocked out Quilisto Madera and Ali Feli finished Rashad Coulter to start the night.
Boxing Results: Floyd Schofield Downs Rene Tellez Giron
In another featured fight of the night, Floyd Schofield bested Rene Tellez Giron. Airing live on DAZN under the Golden Boy promotion banner, Schofield took a step in the right direction at lightweight with a decision win. All three scorecards were in favor of him, with two scoring it 118-109 and a third, 116-111.
On the undercard of Schofield vs. Giron, Gabriela Fundora knocked out Gabriela Celesta Alaniz. With the win, Fundora became the youngest undisputed champion in boxing history.
With Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano set to meet on Netflix later this month, Chantelle Cameron made her intentions known. Cameron topped Patrick Berghult in Birmingham, England to defend the WBC interim junior welterweight title.
The win keeps her in contention for a shot at the winner of Taylor-Serrano. Cameron, 33 years old, swept the scorecards, improving to 2-0 since a loss to Taylor.
Just 22 years old, Fundora now owns the WBO, WBC and WBA flyweight titles, winning them from Alaniz with her seventh round finish. She entered already holding the IBF title.
