Naoya Inoue vs. David Picasso preview

“The Monster” continues to showcase all the skills that make him the pound-for-pound top boxer in the world. The junior featherweight champion has won each of his 29 career bouts. But his last eight fights have all taken place over in Japan, putting him at a disadvantage in terms of when the fight aired.

Now, those in the United States and North America will get the opportunity to see just why Inoue is regarded in such high standing. He owns 26 career knockouts and is coming off a fourth-round finish of Ye Joon Kim. His last North American appearance was in 2021 when eh topped Michael Dasmarinas in the third round.

Picasso is the No. 1 contender to the WBC championship, making him a mandatory challenger to Inoue. He owns a record of 30-0-1 with 17 career finishes. The 24-year-old holds a notable victory over Azat Hovhannisyan from last year.

Hovhannisyan battled Luis Nery in 2023. What makes that somewhat significant is that Nery is the only fighter to knock Inoue down, doing so before falling in the sixth-round of their meeting.

His first pro fight was against a Filipino national champion. From there, he battled a Thai national champion and Japan’s No. 1 ranked light flyweight at the time. In just his fourth pro bouts, he was competing for titles, winning the Japanese light flyweight belt.
