Edgar Berlanga Threatens To ‘Smack’ Boxing Legend After Canelo Alvarez Fight

While Edgar Berlanga is anticipating his main event against Canelo Alvarez, the undefeated super middleweight might be gunning for Oscar De La Hoya next. At Wednesday’s press conference promoting Saturday’s fight, Edgar Berlanga did not hold back on his feelings towards the Golden Boy Promotions head.

“F*ck Oscar De La Hoya too…That motherf*cker keeps talking and talking and talking. We’re going to smack him when we see him,” Edgar Berlanga told the media as the presser neared its conclusion. “He’s got to stop,” he continued.

De La Hoya, who briefly promoted Canelo Alvarez until a premature split in 2020, has turned up his criticism of the super middleweight champion in recent months. The Hall of Famer has denounced Edgar Berlanga as a “subpar” opponent for Alvarez, accusing the pound-for-pound mainstay of ducking David Benavidez.

He has even aligned himself with Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority Chairman Turki Alalshikh, who has engaged in his own verbal battles with Alvarez over the sought-after Benavidez bout.

The animosity has even pushed De La Hoya to lend his support to the UFC, and long-standing enemy Dana White by extension, as it competes with Premier Boxing Champions for both the pay-per-view market and a live audience in Las Vegas this weekend.

In his “Clapback Thursday” series on social media, De La Hoya called the Berlanga matchup a “snoozefest” and “lame” before vowing to attend the Sphere for UFC 306 instead of his preferred combat sport.

White denied any knowledge of his rival attending UFC 306, but subsequent reports stated that he will indeed be in the building as a guest of Alalshikh, whose Riyadh Season serves as co-promoter for the event.

Berlanga dismissed the talk as De La Hoya “trying to f*ck up the event.” Similarly, the UFC CEO said this was just another chance for him “sh*t on Canelo.”
