Devin Haney was expecting to have a meal before he was told Ryan Garcia tested positive for a banned substance.
Haney initially suffered the first loss of his pro boxing career after the score totals were read for his April 20th showdown with Garcia. Haney suffered three knockdowns en route to a majority decision loss, but the bout result would soon be overturned. Garcia’s VADA drug test was flagged for Ostarine, and his win was changed to a no-contest.
While the controversy surrounding the Garcia fight isn’t what Haney envisioned, he believes there is now closure. Despite the circumstances, however, some have asked if the multiple-division champion will make changes to his camp.
The 32-fight veteran has shut down talks of replacing his father, Bill Haney. He simply wants to move on from the Garcia fiasco and prove he’s still among the elite boxers in the world.
Devin Haney Recalls Being Informed of Ryan Garcia’s Drug Test
Serving as a guest on Andre Ward’s “The Art of Ward” podcast, Devin Haney revealed when he was first told that Ryan Garcia failed his VADA test.
“One day, I was just going to Chipotle and then my lawyer called me,” Haney said. “I was like, ‘Man, I don’t feel like talking right now.’ Then, my dad called me. He like, ‘Have you talked to John?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, I ain’t talk to him,’ and then he like, ‘I’m about to put on a three-way,’ and that’s when he told me.”
Haney went on to say that when boxers cut weight, they usually lose some form of strength. He believes Garcia used the banned substances to keep that strength going into their fight.
A rematch with Garcia can’t be ruled out in the future. Haney told Ward that he simply wants a fair fight. With that said, Garcia will need to serve the remainder of his one-year suspension.
