VIDEO: Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya Nearly Come To Blows At Presser For Jaime Munguia Fight

The ongoing issues between Canelo Alvarez and former promoter Oscar De La Hoya overflowed on Wednesday at the final press conference for Saturday’s bout against Jaime Munguia.

For much of Canelo Alvarez’s rise to superstar status in the world of boxing, legendary fighter and Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya served as his promoter and mentor. However, things were forever changed when the pound-for-pound star signed an exclusive 11-fight deal with DAZN in 2018 and after Dela Hoya questioned Alvarez’s coach Eddy Reynoso. It created a rift that has never been repaired.

The two boxing greats have traded shots in the media for years and even faced off in court recently. But things escalated on Wednesday during a promotional event for this weekend’s bout between Alvarez and Munguia — a fighter co-promoted by De La Hoya.

While hyping the fight the “Golden Boy” made mentions of several low points in his life — such as two stints in rehabilitation — that he recently claimed is part of why Alvarez soured on their relationship. However, during his lengthy statement, he made it clear the Mexican star’s rise to fame wouldn’t have happened without the company that uses his one-time ring moniker as their brand, and he demanded the 33-year-old put “some f***ing respect on it.”.

Alvarez began to speak directly to De La Hoya as he finished off his statement. Eventually, the super middleweight champion got up and tried to physically confront the Golden Boy boss but several people jumped in before punches could be thrown. The moment can be viewed above.

Later in the presser, Alvarez went on a verbal rant, attacking his former promoter.

“He’s trying to steal money. He’s a f***ing a**hole, that’s what I said. He tries to keep the attention for him, not for Munguia. He steals from his fighters, that’s what he does.”

De La Hoya can be seen in a separate video laughing at the comments and also telling the superstar boxer to focus on his fight. Suffice it to say, this has added a new layer to Saturday’s card on Amazon Prime and DAZN.
