In a surprising turn of events, Canelo Alvarez is now open to a potential fight with Jake Paul. However, it may be a couple of years before it finally happens.
Former actor, rapper, and YouTube personality Jake Paul has taken the boxing world by storm during this decade. While he has many detractors, there is no denying the attention he has brought to the sport as his legion of fans tune into his fights. There is no greater example of his talents as a promoter than the massive success of his bout with Mike Tyson this month.
While the fight itself was panned by everyone who tuned in, they all bought into the hype and watched on Netflix. Paul has built his career on competing against well-aged stars from boxing and MMA. However, he has also often challenged some of the biggest names in fights sports to bout. Including UFC superstar Conor McGregor and boxing icon Canelo Alvarez.
For years, those pugilists scoffed at the idea of facing the social media influencer. However, after reports claimed that Tyson made around $20 million to be Paul’s opponent, fighters around the sport are now seeing the benefit of a scrap with “El Gallo.” Even undisputed light heavyweight king Artur Beterbiev challenged Paul to a fight after his win over Tyson.
Well, it looks like the Mexican superstar is no longer against a clash with the 11-1 fighter either.
- Jake Paul record: 11-1 (7 knockouts)
Canelo Alvarez open to Jake Paul fight once he’s done competing against elite fighters
“When I’m done with boxing [at an elite level], why not?” Alvarez said on the “Full Send Podcast.” “Maybe, maybe I’ll do it … Yeah [when I’m done competing at the top]. I think it’s good because what happens is there are other people who never watch boxing or they don’t know anything about boxing.”
It is a surprising change of heart after Alvarez literally laughed at the callouts for the last few years. However, money talks. And every athlete is looking to make the most money while they are physically up to the task. What makes the comments all the more interesting is that they actually came weeks before Paul vs. Tyson.
- Canelo Alvarez record: 62-2-2 (39 knockouts)
Canelo Alvarez has suggested the end of his career is near. So, Alvarez vs. Paul in 2025 is unlikely. But it isn’t impossible a bout at the end of 2026 or 2027 could occur.
