Caleb Plant wasn’t exactly impressed by the efforts of Edgar Berlanga against Canelo Alvarez.
Berlanga challenged Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight gold earlier this month. The two did battle inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Berlanga went the distance, he was clearly outmatched and had no answer for the champion’s pressure. Ultimately, Alvarez won the fight via unanimous decision.

Plant competed on the same card headlined by Alvarez vs. Berlanga. He took on Trevor McCumby for the interim WBA super middleweight title. Plant struggled early on, even suffering a pair of knockdowns. The former IBF titleholder showed the resilience he’s known for, storming back for a ninth-round TKO victory.
Caleb Plant Opines on Edgar Berlanga’s Showing Against Canelo Alvarez
Caleb Plant recently appeared on Power 105.1 FM’s “The Breakfast Club.” During his guest appearance, Plant discussed what he thought about Edgar Berlanga’s performance against Canelo Alvarez.
“Just thought it was kind of a one-sided whooping,” Plant said. “He might’ve won maybe a round, but a lot of people expected Berlanga to probably get stopped halfway through the fight in round six, round eight, something like that. He made it through.”
When asked if he has any newfound respect for Berlanga, Plant made it clear that he doesn’t believe the Puerto Rican star stepped up to the plate.
“Is that the level that we respect now? Like, ‘Oh, doesn’t matter if he won a round as long as he survived.’ Not really. I’m not here to brag about who lost the best against Canelo because that seems silly, but at the same time I definitely won more rounds and I went out on my shield trying to win, as opposed to yip yapping the whole leadup and then just, for the most part, keeping my hands in my back pockets the whole fight.”
Failing to Step Up
Plant wasn’t particularly impressed by Berlanga due to his inability to give Alvarez a reason to stop marching forward.
“He’s the big bad wolf who says he punches harder than GGG, but he was the one getting walked down the whole fight,” Plant said. “It’s not like he stuck and moved and boxed and used his skills. Canelo was just walking him down the whole fight.”
On top of that, Plant isn’t sold on Berlanga having the warrior spirit since he wasn’t willing to risk it all when he was down on the scorecards.
“Just go out on your shield, like who cares, but his ego wouldn’t allow him to do that,” Plant said. “He’d rather stay clean and pretty. So, no, I don’t really respect that.”
Plant and Berlanga have traded barbs on social media for months. Perhaps the two are on a collision course that will lead to a lucrative fight in the future.
