A new report has added a whole bunch of fuel to the growing rumors fire about Shane McMahon possibly joining WWE’s top rival AEW.

The McMahon name is iconic in the world of professional wrestling due to the massive influence of WWE founder Vince McMahon on the industry. He turned a regional business into a global brand that has shaped the way the public looks at professional wrestling. While his son Shane has not had nearly the same effect on the industry, he is still a legendary figure.

However, the McMahon brand is slowly fading out of relevancy in professional wrestling. Vince is currently at the center of an ongoing lawsuit and scandals that brought his reign over WWE to an end last year. His daughter Stephanie stepped away from an executive role with the company in 2023, and Shane has seen his impact on the company dwindle in recent years.

However, last month rumors began to swirl that the McMahon brand could continue, but with WWE competitor AEW. Recently, the company’s leader Tony Khan left the door open for the addition of Shane McMahon if rumblings about his interest in joining the promotion were legitimate. On Monday, a new report added some more momentum to that possibility.

PW Insider reported yesterday that McMahon and current AEW TBS champion Mercedes Mone — formerly Sasha Banks in WWE — unexpectedly crossed paths at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The pair of former WWE employees reportedly talked for some time and AEW was allegedly a topic during the impromptu conversation.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Shane McMahon is nearing a contract with AEW, but it certainly could further pique his interest if Mone offered some added details in their conversation that made him feel the upstart company would be the right place for him.
