David Benavidez Next Fight: ‘El Monstruo’ Seeks More Gold In June

Benavidez will battle Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the interim WBC light heavyweight championship. The reigning interim WBC super middleweight championship, Benavidez will be moving up in weight to take on Gvozdyk.

David Benavidez vs. Oleksandr Gvozdyk preview

A perfect 28-0 in his career, Benavidez is coming off a sixth-round finish of Demetrius Andrade. He has successfully retained the interim WBC super middleweight title twice. In 2022, he won the belt with a third-round TKO of David Lemieux.

Benavidez also held the WBC super middleweight belt in 2019 when he finished Anthony Dirrell. He owns wins over Caleb Plant, Ronald Gavril and Kyrone Davis.

Gvozdyk is a 37-year-old from Ukraine who has held the WBC and lineal light heavyweight titles. He is 20-1 in his career, with the lone loss coming in 2019 vs. Artur Beterbiev.

He owns wins over Adonis Stevenson, Doudou Ngumbu and most recently Isaac Rodrigues.

Early knockout power: In two of his first bouts as a pro, Benavidez displayed his incredible knockout power. Competing on the undercard of Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto II, he floored Phillip Jackson Benson in the second round. On the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter undercard, Benavidez dropped Francy Ntetu in a meeting of unbeaten fighters in the seventh.

Taking out a former challenger: In his first big test in 2017, Benavidez stopped former title challenger Rogelio Medina in the eighth round. The win moved him to the top of the list in the super middleweight division.

El Bandera Roja: Coming from a strong family of boxing, Benavidez has overcome plenty of struggles. He is the brother of Jose Benavidez Jr., a former champion, and went 15-0 as an amateur before turning pro.

  • A second title was stripped from his waist in 2020 after coming in heavy for a defense vs. Roamer Alexis Angulo. He would go on to stop Angulo in the 10th round of their bout, eventually fighting for the belt again in 2022.
  • After starting his boxing career at three years of age, Benavidez would record a perfect 15-0 record as an amateur.
