While one judge ruled in favor of Tszyu, the other two gave it to Fundora. Tszyu suffered his first loss in 25 fights while Fundora improved to 21-1-1 with the win.

“We’ve been praying for this moment for a long time and I’m just happy that Tim Tszyu gave me the opportunity and the opportunity became my dream come true,” said Fundora. “Tszyu is a world champion for a reason.

“It’s an honor to share the ring and make history with him.”

The stats favored Fundora, as he landed more by almost double. He is the second member of his family to win a world title, joining sister Gabriela.

In the co-main, Isaac Cruz claimed the WBA super lightweight title with an eighth-round TKO over Rolando Romero. WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara defended his title with a finish of Michael Zerafa in the second round.

Julio Cesar Martinez dealt Angelino Cordova his first loss and remained WBC flyweight champion with a decision.
