At UFC 229 back in 2018, Khabib Nurmagomedov put an end to his rivalry with Conor McGregor. After the two failed to come together for several years, they finally squared off on October 6 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
UFC 229: Khabib Dominates Conor McGregor
Reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov put an end to his feud with Conor McGregor on October 6, 2018 at UFC 229.
In the main event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nurmagomedov retained his title with a fourth round submission. The unbeaten fighter locked in a neck crank that forced McGregor to tap out.
The two had quite the build leading up to the bout. Over 20,000 fans packed inside the arena that night for a total gate over $17 million. The pay-per-view buy rate was recorded at 2.4 million for the card.
In the co-main event, Anthony Pettis was defeated by Tony Ferguson in a lightweight classic. The former champions went toe-to-toe for two rounds before the corner of Pettis stepped in and called it off.
Ferguson and Pettis were named “Fight of the Night” for their efforts.
UFC 229: Derrick Lewis Flexes His Might
In a featured bout on the main card, heavyweight Derrick Lewis flattened Alexander Volkov late in the third round. The win came on the heels of a decision victory for Lewis over Francis Ngannou.
He would move directly into a title fight with then-champion Daniel Cormier, losing by submission later that year.
Also on the main card, Dominick Reyes downed Ovince Saint Preux and Michelle Waterson topped Felice Herrig.
UFC 229: Five Finishes On The Prelims
The event started off with back-to-back finishes, as Anthony Rocco Martin topped Ryan LaFlare and Nik Lentz did the same to Gray Maynard.
Scott Holtzman, Aspen Ladd and Vicente Luque also won by finish while Jussier Formiga and Yana Kunitskaya were decision winners.
Lewis and Ladd picked up “Performance of the Night” bonuses.
